We respond to campaigners against lighting replacement in Ryazan
01 - 01 january 1970
An open letter signed by Igor Kochetkov, deputy chairman of the regional office of All-Russian Society for the Protection of Monuments of History and Culture, addressed to Elena Sorokina, Head of the Ryazan City Administration, was published on 14 February.
In particular, it contains a proposal to cancel the tender for replacing lighting and return to “the time-tested sodium-vapor lamps with a warm glow”.
We understand the conservatism and desire to preserve the appearance of the city, but it is worth considering that sodium lamps do not meet modern requirements for urban comfort and are not environmentally friendly. By installing lamps with high-pressure sodium arc lamps, the city takes on the responsibility to recycle hazardous light sources with mercury and replace them on a regular basis. LED lights have better spectral characteristics and color rendering, which contributes to a favorable perception of the urban environment and road safety. This is one of the factors in favor of modern lighting.
The letter contains other arguments that are also unfounded. Respecting the position of activists and understanding that they act with the best intentions, we want to invite them on a tour of our factory in Ryazan. We can show the production process and talk about what modern lighting equipment should be like.
On 16 February, Lighting Technologies sent a letter on behalf of Vice President Pavel Soshnikov to Igor Kochetkov, deputy chairman of the regional office of All-Russian Society for the Protection of Monuments of History and Culture. We present it in full:
Dear Igor,
We read an open letter signed by you and addressed to Elena Sorokina, Head of the Ryazan City Administration, that was published on Monday, 14 February, in the group of the regional office of All-Russian Society for the Protection of Monuments of History and Culture in Vkontakte.
We consider it important that in Ryazan, a hometown for our company, there are public organizations like yours that aim to protect historical monuments and culture, to improve the appearance of the city and create comfort for its residents.
Our goals are largely the same. Lighting Technologies is a recognized leader in the Russian lighting market. The company's 63,000 sqm plant in Ryazan has state-of-the-art equipment and employs 800 local residents. The company's reputation is confirmed by numerous awards and prizes. But the positive feedback from people living in the cities is more important to us. We receive such feedback from many places, including the Vladimir region – almost all cities there are fully illuminated with our equipment. Positive feedback also comes from Kursk, Smolensk, Nevinnomyssk, Moscow and many other places. Unfortunately, in Ryazan, we cannot boast of significant outdoor lighting projects. For many years, just like the residents of the city, we have seen both streaks of light, flickering from the lights, and nonfunctioning devices on the streets. It is scary to let children go out alone. We hope that soon the situation will change and local residents will be able to see that high-quality modern lighting fixtures play an important role for visual comfort and safety in the city. I will not mention energy efficiency, but this factor is just as important.
I understand that information taken from public sources cannot be counted as reliable. Therefore, I would like to invite you personally and your colleagues to our Ryazan plant. I think that you will completely change your opinion after seeing everything for yourself and talking to our specialists, who have evidence against each argument in the letter. Please let us know when you can make the visit.
I am sure that regional office of All-Russian Society for the Protection of Monuments of History and Culture will discover what modern lighting fixtures are and how they differ from the outdated models with sodium lamps.
