Adaptive lighting control to minimize light pollution
01 - 01 january 1970
Alexander Karev, PhD in Technical Sciences, Head of Science at Lighting Technologies, will speak at the International scientific conference "Lighting Design" (St. Petersburg, 13-14 October 2022). Karev has 30 years of experience in the field of lighting technologies. Participation in the conference is free of charge, but registration is needed.
Here is a brief summary of the speech.
Light pollution is unintentional, incorrectly directed or unwanted artificial light. In urban areas, light pollution is formed by the blinding effect of lighting fixtures, sky glow, the spill of light through windows and chaotic light noise in the surrounding space.
Light pollution poses risks to human health, affects the environment, causes energy losses and millions of tons of carbon dioxide. It costs the world $50bn a year!
The use of adaptive smart lighting for illumination of streets and city highways can minimize the light pollution by implementing the following principles: the light should be directed only where it is needed; it should not be brighter than necessary, according to the requirements of operation mode, should be controlled using sensors, timers, controllers; short wavelengths (blue/violet) in LEDs should be limited to a minimum.
These principles can be implemented using a lighting control platform based on software and hardware complex AMBIOT IoT. The use of such smart control platform allows: to provide modes of operation of the lighting device with several options of power (luminous flux) and light chromaticity depending on time or conditions; to control the positioning of the lighting device on the support and light distribution on the road. These techniques not only minimize light pollution, but also significantly reduce the power consumption of the lighting device.
The effectiveness of adaptive outdoor lighting based on the AMBIOT platform can be expressed by the following formula: tremendous energy savings + minimal light pollution + public satisfaction.
